Kivoro’s Cement Enhancer is a line of specialty chemicals created to optimise material performance, sustainability, efficiency and reduction of environmental impact by utilizing novel technologies in the cement industry.

Why?
The engineering problem

The main drawback of cementitious materials is their inherent brittleness, which is due to the materials’ poor resistance to cracking, low tensile strength and high porosity, all affecting the mechanical properties and long-term durability of concrete. Durability and service life are major considerations in the design of concrete structures subject to aggressive environments.

The environmental problem

Buildings and the construction industry account for near 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. The cement industry is one of the most energy intensive industrial sub-sectors, accounting for almost 15% of the total energy consumed by manufacturing. On average, to produce one ton of cement, 3.4 GJ of thermal energy (in a dry process) and 110 kWh of electrical energy are used up. Furthermore, manufacturing a ton of cement releases 0.73–0.99 tons of CO2.

Part of the complex solution to reduce those emissions is increasing the lifespan of new construction. Nanotechnology has the potential to enable efficient decarbonization pathways in nullifying the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the concrete industry. Specifically, nanotechnology-based additives can reduce the cement content in concrete by enhancing the mechanical properties of the admixture, thereby reducing the total amount of material required for construction.
